Last Update: March 21, 2025

Detailed information about Carrying foreign currency on behalf of others:

No, according to Indian customs regulations, you generally cannot carry foreign currency on behalf of others to India, as each individual must declare their own foreign exchange and adhere to the permitted limits, meaning you cannot pool your allowance with someone else's; exceeding the limit can lead to legal consequences.

Key points to remember:

Individual declaration:

Each passenger entering India must declare their own foreign currency on a Currency Declaration Form if the amount exceeds the specified limit.

Limit on cash:

You can bring in foreign currency without limit, but if the cash component (currency notes) exceeds US$5,000 or its equivalent, you need to declare it.

Total limit:

The total value of foreign exchange (including traveler's checks) exceeding US$10,000 or its equivalent must be declared.
